Transfer Students

Student financial aid does not automatically transfer between institutions. Instead, TAMIU will recalculate your eligibility based on the information provided in your FAFSA. The amounts may vary depending on TAMIU’s financial aid policies and available funding.

Please note that if you transfer in the middle of the academic year, the federal student aid you received at your previous institution may impact the amount of aid TAMIU will award you.

Applications for assistance cannot be fully considered until all the required documents are received by the Financial Aid Office and the applicant's admission status as a regular degree-seeking student is approved by the Admissions Office.

Students seeking a degree at another institution but attending TAMIU for one semester are considered transient students. Transient students are not eligible to receive financial aid unless they turn in a consortium agreement.

Transferring to TAMIU

Apply for financial aid as soon as possible

Update your FAFSA to include TAMIU by visiting fafsa.gov and adding our school code: 009651. Ensure you select the correct award year. If unsure, please contact our office for clarification. Submitting the incorrect year may delay the processing of your application.

Cancel your financial aid at the current institution

  • You must request that your current institution cancel your financial aid awards for the semester you plan to attend TAMIU.
  • Ensure that the previous institution cancels all pending and scheduled aid with the U.S. Department of Education.
  • You must complete the exit counseling requirement if you received student loans at your previous institution.
  • If your current institution does not cancel your funding, TAMIU cannot award you financial aid. A pending semester award at another school can affect your annual award limits and your eligibility at TAMIU.

Monitor your TAMIU student email and financial aid portal

  • The TAMIU financial aid office will send important notices and information requests to your TAMIU Email.
  • Submit all requested documents promptly, ensuring that the forms are complete.
  • Financial aid processing may take up to 2 weeks after your file is complete, depending on the time of year.

Important Information for Transfer Students

  • You may receive a different type or amount of financial aid than your previous institution. Financial aid does not transfer between schools but is reevaluated based on eligibility and funding availability at TAMIU.
  • If you received Federal Direct or Federal Perkins Loans at your previous institution, you must complete Exit Loan Counseling there. This will help you understand repayment for your federal student loans, but it will not initiate repayment if you are enrolled at least half-time at TAMIU.
  • An incomplete admissions file will delay the processing of your financial aid. Be sure to submit your official final academic transcript from your previous institution to the TAMIU Office of Admissions as soon as it becomes available.
  • If you are admitted and enrolled as a non-degree student, you will not be eligible for financial aid.
