For more than 25 years, the International Language Institute (ILI) has provided high quality English instruction. The ILI offers a dynamic language program which includes English as a Second Language (ESL), Spanish, and other languages and preparation courses. Our courses are intended for the serious student who wants to learn a target language within a short period of time. All instructors have vast experience in teaching ESL or their respective languages and are unquestionably dedicated to the students’ learning.

About our English as a Second Language (ESL) Program

Our ESL program is the most intensive and structured of all the course offerings. It is a program designed to meet the needs of individuals interested in preparing for academic course work in the United States and abroad as well as those interested in learning a language for personal or professional growth.

Our program consists of:

6 levels of English language instruction
- Level 1 (beginner level) to level 6 (advanced level)
- A placement test prior to registration is required for students to be placed in the appropriate level.
Two courses per level
- Listening/Speaking/Grammar
- Reading/Writing
Courses are offered in 8-week sessions year-round
- Spring I (January – March)
- Spring II (March – May)
- Summer (May – July)
- Fall I (August – October)
- Fall II (October – December)

TOEFL Waiver

After completing level 6 at ILI and obtaining a grade of B or better, students may qualify for a TOEFL waiver that is accepted for admission at some TAMIU degree programs ONLY (not accepted at other institutions). The TOEFL waiver is valid for one year after completing level 6 at the ILI.
