Social Change Leadership Series
Nationally institutions have had a rise of reports of discrimination and student protests where they feel their voices are not being heard. Institutions face social justice issues and inequities.
For our institution to live up to its mission, we must continuously provide resources and support to our students, faculty, staff, and administrators. We must have a critical eye on where our institution stands and how we can effectively provide educational opportunities for all.
The Texas A&M International University Office of Student Orientation, Leadership and Engagement Social Change Initiative is an effort to incorporate values of service and respect and encourage personal growth around individual identities and power dynamics.
Given the amount of complexity on what social justice and diversity means, TAMIU community members will greatly benefit from yearlong programming. These programs will include Cultural Heritage Month Events and Social Change Leadership Series while engaging in dialogues about issues of power, privilege, oppression, and identities.
These programs would provide a space and resources for diverse group of students, faculty, and staff on campus. To add, collaboration throughout the university will be encouraged. We need to come together as a community to effectively facilitate dialogues on issues of social justice. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s philosophy on education is that, “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education” (1947).
