Financial Literacy
8 a.m. - 12 p.m.

💵 Budgeting: Starship Budgeting Basics

Learn how to create and maintain a budget that aligns with your financial goals. Our activities include interactive budgeting exercises, tips for tracking expenses, and strategies for effective money management.

📈 Saving & Investing: Stellar Saving Strategies

This section covers how you can save money. You will be able to explain what saving is and why saving money for unexpected expenses is important, plan to reach saving goals, and recognize warning signs of possible fraud and scams.

💳 Credit Building: Exploring Credit Constellation

You will learn how to build and maintain a strong credit score, essential for financial health. Topics will include credit reports, improving credit scores, responsible credit card use, and managing debt effectively.

We'll discuss and present to you about insurance types such as health, auto, and renter's insurance, emphasizing the importance of insurance coverage and financial protections.

💰 Taxes: Navigating Tax Galaxy

Delve into understanding taxes, deductions, and tax planning strategies. We'll cover tax basics, common tax deductions, and filing taxes as a student or young professional.

Understanding professional behavior and appropriate dress codes in various STEM settings. Fun activities like a "Fashion Galaxy" showcase or role-playing scenarios will be included to emphasize etiquette and attire tips.

While this event warmly welcomes the public, we kindly request registration exclusively from undergraduate TAMIU students.

Yes! Lunch will be provided for all undergraduate TAMIU students for all sessions.

We recommend casual attire for the workshops. Dress comfortably to make the most out of your learning experience. You may also consider bringing a sweater or light jacket as meeting room temperatures can vary.

  • Your resume! We'll work on an activity that can help you enhance your resume to make it more attractive to potential employers or schools.
  • A notebook or laptop to take notes during the workshops.
  • A water bottle and snacks to stay refreshed throughout the day.
  • If you have any specific materials or documents related to your financial or career goals, feel free to bring those as well!

A full workshop session is two days long. Each day is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a lunch break included.

Each day is divided into morning sessions (8 a.m. to 12 p.m.) focused on financial literacy topics and afternoon sessions (1 to 5 p.m.) focused on career readiness topics.

We encourage everyone to arrive promptly at 8 a.m. Sign-in forms will be available to track the time of your arrival. If you're interested in receiving the $200 stipend, please note that attendance and active participation for the entire workshop are required. This ensures that you get the most out of the learning experience and are eligible for any incentives offered!

You qualify for the $200 stipend if you meet the following requirements:

  • Attend a full session (two days)
  • Must be an undergraduate student at TAMIU registered for the Fall 2024 semester
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen/National and/or Permanent Resident
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Must have a STEM major declared:
    • Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Pre-Engineering, Science with Grades 7-12 Certification, Mathematics with Grades 7-12 Certification, and Management Information Systems
