Catalog Information

Program Learning Objectives

  1. Synthesize knowledge from the arts, humanities, sciences, and other disciplines in developing a framework for nursing knowledge and practice.
  2. Explore the effect of variations in health status, developmental processes, values, beliefs and attitudes, culture, history, and environment on nursing care needs.
  3. Use critical thinking, clinical judgment/decision making, problem-solving, and the research process in the development of nursing knowledge and practice.
  4. Assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate evidenced-based and culturally - appropriate safe nursing care with patients, families, populations and communities.
  5. Evaluate utilization of health promotion strategies in the development of nursing practice.
  6. Develop professional nursing practice frameworks and roles, including the provider of patient-centered care, health care team member/collaborator, leader/manager, educator, scholar, patient-safety advocate, activist, mentor, and entrepreneur.
  7. Evaluate the impact of evolving technological, socioeconomic, political and demographic changes on nursing practice and health care systems.
  8. Adhere to legal and ethical principles in the development of professional nursing practice.

Application Requirements

Students are eligible for admission to clinical nursing courses when the following requirements have been met; however meeting these requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the nursing program, only consideration.

Students will apply upon completion or in the last semester of completing both the University Core Curriculum and BSN Additional Requirements for admission in either Fall or Spring semesters.

  1. Students must be admitted by Texas A&M International University and must be declared nursing major.
  2. Completion of University Core Curriculum and BSN Additional Requirements with a grade of "C" or better with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) is required for application.
  3. Completion of all science courses, with a minimum grade of "C" and a grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) is required for application. In the event a science course was taken more than once, the science GPA for that course will be determined by averaging the grades (including any grades of "C" or below).
  4. At student expense, the HESI Admission Assessment will be administered to the students who meet the criteria above. Sections that are tested are the following: reading, grammar, vocabulary, mathematics, anatomy & physiology, biology, and critical thinking.The scores on the HESI will be considered in the admission process.

The College of Nursing and Health Sciences must receive student's completed application and supporting documentation (listed below) due on the Monday after Spring Commencement for Fall admission and on the Monday after Fall Commencement for Spring admission.

The application on NursingCAS will open on February 1st for Fall admission and September 1st for Spring admission.

  1. Application to clinical nursing courses is now required to be submitted via NursingCAS, the centralized application service for nursing. Visit www.nursingcas.org to start your application or log into your existing account. Visit the Add Program page to select Texas A&M International University's nursing program and complete the steps to fill out and submit your application. Many resources are available to help you complete your application, including the applicant help center and visual instructions. You can also contact NursingCAS support with questions.
  2. At student expense, a federal background check will be conducted by the Texas Board of Nursing (TBON). A copy of postcard sent to student by the TBON, indicating clearance, must be submitted by uploading the document in NursingCAS in the Program Materials> Documents sections, once you have added Texas A&M International University to your application. A student will not be accepted in clinical nursing courses if they do not have clearance from the TBON.

*Minimum GPA and other requirements are subject to change. Please see the Undergraduate Admissions Counselor located in Canseco Hall 111B or 111F before every semester for most updated information.

Transfer Applicants

The Dr. F. M. Canseco School of Nursing may accept transfer coursework taken from another accredited Texas nursing program. Transfer applicants must be transferring from the other Texas nursing program in good standing. A letter from the Dean of the other institution stating good standing status will be required. Transfer applicants must meet all of the University and the Dr. F. M. Canseco School of Nursing admission requirements stipulated above.

Student Selection

The Admission and Progression Committee determine the final selection of the students entering the program. Admission is based upon students grade point averages and scores on the HESI A2.

Declaratory Order Requirements of the Texas Board of Nursing (TBON)

The College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Dr. F. M. Canseco School of Nursing adheres to the TBON rule on declaratory order regarding eligibility for licensure. A petition for a declaratory order is a formal disclosure to the TBON regarding an eligibility issue that may prevent an applicant from taking the NCLEX examination upon completion of a nursing program. The declaratory order process permits the TBON to make decisions regarding a petitioner's eligibility for licensure prior to entering or completing a nursing program.

Accommodations for Disabilities

TAMIU provides reasonable accommodation to qualified students with a disability. Upon admission, a nursing student who discloses a disability and requests accommodation may be asked to provide documentation of his or her disability for purpose of determining appropriate accommodations, including modifications to the program. The TAMIU College of Nursing and Health Sciences will provide reasonable accommodations, but is not required to make accommodations that would substantially alter the nature or requirements of the program or provide auxiliary aids that present an undue burden. To matriculate or continue in the curriculum, the nursing student must be able to perform all the essential functions either with or without accommodation.
