TAMIU MSEIP Sophomore Workshop Program (MSEIP-SOPHOMORE)

The August 2019 Workshop Application is open:

MSEIP-SOPHOMORE Registration Form

About

Students will participate in the one-week workshop at TAMIU during the summer. At the beginning of the workshop, students will take a capabilities assessment survey to evaluate strengths and weaknesses. To promote the development of a professional attitude, students will then receive ethics training. This activity will encourage participants to develop a serious and responsible attitude towards their profession. After lunch on day one, students will meet the MSEIP-ESIRE tutors who will assist them throughout the rest of the workshop. Based on the initial survey, the workshop will be split into five groups with a tutor who will help facilitate activities.

Each group will be assigned a project that emphasizes critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students will be assigned to a group based on their weaknesses as identified in the survey. Projects will focus on such topics as coding for engineers, mathematics skills, design, and troubleshooting. These projects will give students a taste of the rigors of upper-division coursework.

Daily breaks for team building and social activities will be offered. At the end of the week, each group will make a final presentation sharing the findings from their project. This will give students an opportunity to improve their communication skills.

Additionally, all participants will learn from their peers about the entirety of the projects executed during the workshop. At the end of the week, students will complete an exit survey that will allow them to reflect on their experience during the week.

In addition, to add diversity to the workshop experiences, information about professional engineering societies will be given. Additionally, students will be introduced to the officers and students involved in TAMIU student professional chapters such as the Societies of Women Engineers, Hispanic Professional Engineers, and Automotive Engineers International and Robotics Organization. This activity will further increase the community building of students and strengthen their ties to the University. Information regarding the state professional licensing exam will also be provided as a means to motivate students to achieve their career goals. An additional enrichment activity will include a visit to a local engineering firm.

For students considering transferring from TAMIU to complete their engineering degrees, detailed information about transfer agreements will be provided. Cohorts will be developed for students who will be attending
the same institution. This support mechanism will facilitate greater retention for transfer students.

Projects may include:

  1. Design and Implementation of Digital System: Digital Clock
  2. Human Factor and Ergonomics: Driving Simulator Study
  3. Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells
  4. Flight Simulators: Statistical Analysis Study
  5. Introduction to Virtual Reality
