About
TRiO STEM is a federally funded Student Support Services (SSS) program committed to the success of first-generation, low-income, and/or scholars with disabilities within the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math), Nursing and Health Science fields.
MISSION & GOALS
Our mission is to empower qualifying STEM, Nursing and Health Science scholars to:
- Achieve maximum academic success and career readiness
- Develop skills, knowledge, and attributes to complete a post-secondary education
- Graduate-equipped professionals and global citizens who will lead through lifelong learning
Our goal is to provide academic support to STEM, Nursing, and Health Science scholars to help them achieve their full potential. Overall we aim to:
- Assist with necessary skills, knowledge, and attributes to complete a post-secondary education
- Raise awareness and provide guidance to students for graduate school and professional career opportunities
- Enhance the potential for financial assistance by providing education on financial and economic literacy

According to the Department of Education (2021), first generation is defined as an individual with:
- Non-Degreed Parents
An individual whose parents did not complete a bachelor's degree
- Non-Degreed Single Parent
An individual who lived with and received support from only one parent who did not complete a bachelor's degree.
There are many reasons why our students choose us, including our exclusive services, 10+ years of academic expertise and work experience, friendly staff, and welcoming environment.
In order to qualify for the program, you must be BOTH:
1. A current or a recently admitted TAMIU student pursuing a STEM, Nursing or Health Science bachelor's degree
AND
2. Either low-income, first-generation and/or an individual with a documented disability
