Dance

Texas A&M International University offers a minor in dance or a dance concentration through the university's Multidisciplinary Studies major. Dance courses may also be taken for elective credit. The dance program is housed in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts and offers courses in the following genres:

  • Modern/Contemporary
  • Ballet
  • Jazz
  • Ballet Folklorico
  • Dance Conditioning

Dance minors are required to take the following courses:

  • Beginning Modern Dance
  • Improvisation
  • Concert Choreography
  • Dance History

Dance Performaces

The dance program produces a fall and spring concert that features both faculty and student choreography. Students also have the opportunity to attend and perform at the American College Dance Association conference each year and the TAMIU Folklorico Ensemble performs locally, nationally, and internationally. Students are sometimes asked to assist or perform in the dance faculty's professional works.

TAMIU dance students performed in the adjudicated concert series at the American College Dance Association (ACDA) South-Central Regional Conference at Texas State University. Dance students, Emily González, Victoria Gutierrez, and Carolina Ramírez performed Mythic and In Between, choreographed by Assistant Professor and dance program coordinator Tim Rubel. This piece will also be included in our Spring Dance Concert of faculty and student choreography, April 25th, 2025. Please join us!

TAMIU's Ballet Folklorico wins big at the Dance Adjudication Festival

The TAMIU Ballet Folklorico traveled to Edinburg, Texas on Saturday, March 4, 2023 to participate at the UTRGV Dance Adjudication Festival where several traditional folklorico and contemporary folklorico groups from Texas gathered to compete. Four TAMIU students competed in the category 'University Contemporary Folklorico'. The group received two trophies: Best Contemporary Folklorico Solo (Marla Munoz) and Best Overall Contemporary Folklorico Group. All four dancers received medals, but only the best solo received a trophy.

TAMIU's Ballet Folklorico wins at regional competition

Texas A&M International University Ballet Folklorico traveled to compete on Sunday, February 26, 2023 at the "Bailes de Mi Tierra Competencia Folklorica" in Cedar Creek, TX. 23 dancers traveled to compete at Cedar Creek High School. The group competed with 9 entries, including 4 solos, 3 duets, and 1 cuadro (group piece).

They won in the University/College Category:

  • 1st place intermediate solo, Carolina Hinojosa
  • 2nd place intermediate solo, Victoria Moreno
  • 1st place advanced solo, Angelica Favela
  • 2nd place advanced solo, Jonathan Ruiz
  • 1st place beginner duet, Naila Garza and Denisse Garza
  • 1st place intermediate duet, Jonathan Ruiz and Clarissa Buenrostro
  • 1st place advanced duet, Angel Flores and Victoria Dubon
  • 1st place beginner cuadro “La Diaspora Africana en Veracruz, Mexico”
