Liberation in the Americas

Liberation in the Americas, a speaker and panel series from September 2020 to April 2021, brings national and international multi-disciplinary, humanities-oriented scholars and experienced organizers to the Laredo community to engage community members and students in the ideas and actions embedded in struggles for liberation in the Americas.

Topics include the recent evolution of a philosophy of liberation, liberation from gender based violence, black liberation, and the dilemma of cultural assimilation among immigrant families. Certain speakers will present on a panel with local leaders who are confronting the same issue(s) discussed in order to weigh theoretical and historical vantage points against “real world” experiences stemming from the nuts and bolts perspective of those running an organization that directly impacts those afflicted populations.

All talks are free and open to the public.

Liberation from Gender-Based Violence

Date: Thursday, March 25
Time: 7 p.m. CST

In “Gender Violence and Peacemaking in Latin America”, Dr. Juan Carlos Sanchez Sierra will discuss how peace agreements to reach stability and settle dynamics of violence provide a prima facie solution for the agents at play, but nonetheless continue to preserve violence that inhibit women´s participation beyond traditional roles. Sister Rosemary Welsh will be discussing what she has learned from her experiences working with survivors of domestic violence.
