Opportunities for Research
Undergraduate Research Opportunities
The Department of Mathematics and Physics offers undergraduate students the opportunity to volunteer and to participate in faculty-mentored research projects in disciplines that interest them. The programs offer experience, academic growth, and, in some instances, credits. The goal is to introduce students to the rigors of academic research and the fulfillment of discovery.
Graduate Research Opportunities
The Department of Mathematics and Physics offers graduate students the opportunity to be involved in various research projects which are supervised by tenured and tenure-track faculty. This provides the students with the intellectual ability to understand various disciplines in mathematics and physics. The department supports graduate students to travel and present their research in conferences.
Faculty & Student Development
The Department of Mathematics and Physics encourages and supports the professional development of its faculty, together with providing extensive venues and forums for our students to be exposed to current research and innovative ideas for the advancement of their academic growth. Our faculty has research specialties in pure and applied mathematics, statistics and mathematics education, and physics, and encourages collaborations between faculty and students both within and outside the classroom. New, current, and invited faculty share their research at the departmental colloquia sponsored by the Department of Mathematics and Physics and the School of Engineering. For students, opportunities are provided to present their latest projects and research at two main local forums and one external forum - Lamar Bruni Vergara & Guillermo Z. Benavides (LBV) Academic Conference held in the Spring semesters, Fall Student Conference held every Fall semester, and TAMUS Pathways Student Research Symposium held every year in one of the A&M System's institutions. These conferences provide a forum for undergraduate and graduate students across multiple academic disciplines to present their research findings in either a poster or an oral format. The College of Arts and Sciences provides limited travel support for students presenting at regional venues.
The University provides opportunities for faculty to be selected annually as the University’s Scholar of the Year (SOY), Teacher of the Year (TOY), and Distinguished Scholars of the Year (DSY) based on their merits and accomplishments. Faculty and students alike are encouraged to avail themselves of the various opportunities provided to them. The Office of Research and Sponsored Projects (ORSP) of the University makes available limited internal grants that include intramural research funding to work during the summer months. ORSP also encourages and facilitates external grant opportunities on behalf of faculty. The University offers faculty development leaves and funding for travel and equipment for faculty.
