FYE Community Engagement

All Signature Courses are strategically designed to engage you in problem-based learning. This means your class will identify an issue in your community that is relevant to your course content. After participating in class discussions and reviewing relevant research, you and your group will come up with a way to alleviate the problem or a potential solution effort. Your instructor will help you make contact with community partners you can work with to carry out your project.

Community engagement guidelines

  • Treat all people, regardless of race, religion, or culture, with respect and consideration.
  • Dress neatly and appropriately. You are representing yourself, your class, and the University. Wear a TAMIU t-shirt if available and appropriate.
  • Arrive on time; there are designated times for our community engagement, and tardiness not only disrupts the schedule of our community partner, but also demonstrates a lack of professionalism.
  • Respect the privacy of our community partners:
    • If someone shares personal information, please try to redirect the conversation back to the project.
    • Do not ask anyone personal information that is not relevant to the project.
  • Choose appropriate language and messages; do not use sarcasm and vulgar language.
  • Be open and willing to learn at all times.
  • If you are concerned about something you heard, please report it to your UNIV professor.
  • If you are working with minors, maintain professionalism at all times, including not contacting them via social media.
  • Maintain a professional relationship at all times.
  • Do not take photos of the people you are working with.
  • Always work with a classmate; avoid being alone with anyone you are working with.
