Student Probation

Academic Probation

Students are placed on Academic Probation at the conclusion of any long semester (Fall or Spring) when their institutional cumulative grade point average (GPA) at Texas A&M International University falls below 2.0. Such students are encouraged to participate in academic support programs, such as tutoring and supplemental instruction, and academic advising to get back in good academic standing.

Re-Admit Probation or Transfer Probation Information

Undergraduate students are placed on Re-Admit Probation if they were previously suspended from the University and sat out longer than one year. Undergraduates are placed on Transfer Probation when they are accepted by the Admissions Committee even though their overall GPA from all other colleges or universities is below a 2.0. Students are encouraged to participate in academic support programs, such as tutoring and supplemental instruction, and academic advising to establish good academic standing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Academic Probation

Undergraduate students are placed on academic probation if their institutional GPA falls below a 2.00 (a “C” average) during any long semester (Fall/Spring).

If you are in academic probation, you may continue your enrollment at TAMIU. If your institutional GPA at TAMIU falls below a 2.00 for two consecutive semesters, you will be placed in academic suspension

Students that fall below a 2.00 institutional GPA for 2 consecutive semesters are placed in Academic Suspension. Students in Academic suspension may submit a Petition for Academic Reinstatement to be reviewed and if approved be allowed to continue their enrollment at TAMIU during a long semester.

It is important that you are familiar with your academic program’s GPA requirements to ensure that you adhere to them. Program GPA requirements can be different from academic probation and suspension GPA criteria.

To achieve good standing, you will need to raise your GPA above a 2.00 at TAMIU. The most effective way to raise your GPA is to re-take courses that you did not pass in the previous semester and by taking advantage of campus resources, such as tutoring and supplemental instruction.

You are able to pre-register for the next semester. However, if a 2.0 GPA is not earned by the end of Fall, Spring or Summer session, you will be dropped from all pre-registered classes by the Registrar’s Office.

To avoid being dropped from your pre-registered courses, you must submit a Petition for Academic Reinstatement. If your Petition for Academic Reinstatement is approved, you will be allowed to continue with your enrollment for the following term. If your Petition for Academic Reinstatement is not approved, you will be dropped from the pre-registered courses.

If you are in academic probation, you are allowed to enroll for one additional semester in an attempt to achieve the required institutional cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better. You are encouraged to participate to the fullest in academic support programs and to seek academic advising

Yes. In fact, this is the quickest way to improve your GPA. When repeating courses, the original grade will remain on the transcript, but only the most recent grade will be used in the GPA calculation. You should meet with your advisor to discuss specific course requirements.

There is no limit to the number or credits that can be repeated. However, for courses repeated three or more times there is an additional fee.

Any course taken at TAMIU must be repeated at TAMIU in order to replace the previous grade in your GPA. Students who repeat a course at another community college or University will receive credit for the class as long as it is a C or better, but the repeated course will not help improve their TAMIU GPA.

No, you do not have to take the class the next semester or with the same instructor. However, the class must have the same course name and number (i.e. ENGL 1301), in order to apply the repeat. It is strongly advised you repeat the class the next semester while the material is fresh in your mind to quickly raise your GPA.

If your GPA is below 2.0, you will be put on Financial Aid probation. This requires you to meet with a Financial Aid Advisor, since the Financial Aid Office has specific requirements which are separate from the academic probation requirements.

Re-Admit/Transfer Probation

You must obtain an Institutional GPA of 2.0 or better by the end of your first semester at TAMIU. Re-Admit students are strongly encouraged to repeat previously failed courses to raise their GPA.

Students on Re-Admit or Transfer Probation are allowed to pre- register for the next semester. However, if a 2.0 GPA is not earned by the end of Fall, Spring or Summer sessions, the student will be dropped from all pre-registered classes by the Registrar’s Office.

No, there is no appeal granted for Re-Admit or Transfer Probation students.

Students who do not earn an Institutional 2.0 GPA by their first semester will be placed on academic suspension and will not be allowed to continue at TAMIU until they have sat out one long semester (Fall/Spring).
