TAMIU, Consulate General of México Sign MOU, Reaffirm IME BECAS Scholarship Support
For the 11th year in a row, the Consulate General of México and Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) have renewed their continued support of the Institute of Mexicans in the Exterior (IME) Becas Program at TAMIU.
Consul General of México in Laredo Juan Carlos Mendoza Sánchez and TAMIU president Dr. Pablo Arenaz recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) reaffirming their commitment to the IME-BECAS Program.
This year, TAMIU received a total of $8,000 in scholarship funds from the IME Beca Program, which will be matched by TAMIU. Additional funding incudes: $5,000 from Ermilo Richer, CEO of Richer Agencia Aduanal, $2,000 from the Mexican Cultural Institute of Laredo and $2,000 from Glafiro Montemayor y Companía, S.C. (GEMCO).
A total of 17 students are receiving the 2024 IME-BECAS Scholarship. The recipients include Matthew Soto, Arianna Alvarado, Bridget Holguin, Taylor Jacobson, Ximena Rios, Yulissa Leal, Eduardo Nafarrate González Quijano, José García, Yenesis Chávez, Melanie Mora Treviño, Victor Estrada, Dora Guerrero, Kevin Hernández, Rebecca López, Mia Villarreal, Manuel Amozurrita Tejada, and Manuel Salazar.
The students were joined by family and friends at the ceremony.
Since 2013, the IME-BECAS Program has awarded a total of $253,940 in scholarship funds between the Consulate, community partners, and TAMIU's matching funds. The Program now supports students from the border area on both sides of the Rio Grande by providing them with additional educational resources.
Each year, the IME-BECAS Program scholarship is made available to both undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled at TAMIU. They are required to be enrolled full-time, maintain an overall GPA of 2.75 or greater, or submit a high school GPA of 3.0 or greater for incoming freshman students.
