TAMIU Offers Lactation Pod, Spaces for Parenting Students
Parenting students at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) can now access another valuable resource while on campus. A Mamava Lactation Pod is now located on the second floor of the TAMIU Student Center.
Parenting students, faculty, staff, and members of the general public are encouraged to use this Pod, which requires scheduling and is locked for privacy. Individuals who are nursing or lactating may request Pod use by visiting https://go.tamiu.edu/lacpod.
The Lactation Pod has substantial benefit for parenting students and their academic success, said Mayra Hernández, director of TAMIU’s Office of Student Conduct and Community Engagement.
“Lactation pods are a vital resource that supports student parents, promotes health, and contributes to the health and well-being of all. By providing facilities that accommodate breastfeeding, TAMIU joins other universities in providing strategic resources that help retain student parents, reducing barriers to their education and contributing to their academic success,” Hernández said.
In addition to the newly added Lactation Pod, two lactation spaces are available to parenting students on campus. The first is in the Academic Innovation Center (AIC), rooms 307A and 307C. The spaces are available Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Accommodations outside this time frame may be made on a case-by-case basis.
A second space is in Student Health Services, (STC) 125. The space is available Mondays, from 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m., the first and fourth Tuesdays of the month from 1 – 4 p.m. and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Both spaces are equipped with a comfortable chair, a small table, an electrical outlet, a fridge, and a sink with running water.
The Mamava Lactation Pod was purchased and made possible by the TAMIU Student Emotional and Academic Success (SEAS) Project, a grant funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Hispanic-Serving Institutions Program.
Pregnant and parenting students attending the University are encouraged to take advantage of various programs and services, including a Parenting Liaison. For more information on these resources, visit https://go.tamiu.edu/parentingstudents
