TAMIU Presents Panel Discussion on Local, Border Town Crimes Thursday, Aug. 29

Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) College of Arts and Sciences will present a panel discussion and research presentation on local and border town crime issues on Thursday, Aug. 29, from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Academic Innovation Center (AIC), Room 125.

Themed "Local/Border Town Crime Problems," the panel discussion aims to address crime issues affecting local and border towns and explore strategies for enhancing community engagement and safety. Examples of crime problems include gang activities, drug/human smugglings, burglaries, theft, delinquent acts in and surrounding schools, and immigration issues. The discussion is free and open to the public.

Panelists include TAMIU campus police chief Cordelia G. Pérez; Luis G. Martínez, Webb County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division commander; Joshua Coleman and Leopoldo Silva, both Texas State Trooper sergeants at the Laredo Office; Guadalupe Gómez, Webb County Constable; and Belinda Latsky-Campbell, a TAMIU Criminal Justice doctoral program student and Laredo school teacher. Dr. Jihoon Jeong, TAMIU assistant professor, department of Social Sciences, will serve as panel moderator.

In addition to the panel discussion, research presentations will be delivered by Dr. Fei Luo, TAMIU associate professor of Criminal Justice and TAMIU Criminal Justice Program co-director, and Carlos Alvarez, a TAMIU Criminal Justice doctoral program student. Their research will focus on local crime issues and discuss potential policy implications.

Dr. Marcus A. Ynalvez, interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Dr. John C. Kilburn, TAMIU professor, Department of Social Sciences, will provide welcoming remarks for the event. Dr. Seungmug (Zech) Lee, TAMIU associate professor of Criminal Justice, will make the opening remark, and Dr. Peter Haruna, professor of Public Administration, will deliver the closing remarks.
