You might say that things really add up at Texas A&M International University.

That’s because the 9th Coastal Bend Mathematics and Statistics Conference was hosted at TAMIU April 5.

The Conference included over 120 faculty, student, and poster presentations on a variety of mathematical and statistical topics. An online program can be accessed at https://go.tamiu.edu/cbms.

TAMIU’s interim president and CFO Juan Castillo remarked on the importance of the Conference and its potential for breakthroughs.

“In our lifetimes, we have witnessed incredible advances in science and technology resulting from once abstract mathematical concepts. What was being done at the Conference, and the level of interest and research in mathematical exploration presented there, may one day lead to profound, unimaginable discoveries later…,” Castillo said.

The sentiments were echoed by University provost and vice president for Academic Affairs Dr. Claudia San Miguel.

“This year’s Conference featured an exceptional lineup of speakers, presentations, and sessions that highlighted the diversity and richness of mathematical science…attendees left the Conference inspired, energized, and connected with others who share a passion for these essential fields,” said Dr. San Miguel.

This year’s plenary speaker was Dr. Afi Y. Wiggins, managing director of the Charles A. Dana Center at the University of Texas at Austin. Her presentation focused on dismantling barriers in education to supporting innovative mathematics and science education initiatives for student success. A veteran in P20 education research and practice, Wiggins leads the development and implementation of evidence-based strategies for systemic educational reform at the Dana Center.

The annual one-day Coastal Bend Mathematics and Statistics Conference initially took place at Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi in 2016. It serves as one of the most important gatherings of students, teachers, and industry professionals from the Coastal Bend community in South Texas and provides a leading forum for the dissemination of theoretical and applied research in mathematics, statistics, and other related areas.

Leading the TAMIU effort was Conference organizer Dr. Rohitha Goonatilake, TAMIU professor and chair of the College of Arts and Sciences, department of Mathematics and Physics.
