TAMIU-LBV Literacy Partnership

TAMIU and Laredo College both contribute federal community work study funding to employ tutors. Grant funds generously provided by the LBV Charitable Trust also create several part-time employee tutor positions. Laredo ISD principals occasionally allocate district-funded tutoring positions to Partnership tutoring. The Partnership hosts intern tutors in the TAMIU Multidisciplinary Studies program, as well as, AmeriCorps terms of national service may also be available through Laredo ISD for tutors ready to make a year-long commitment to the community. The Partnership hosts intern tutors in the TAMIU Multidisciplinary Studies program, as well as field experience tutors in College of Education introductory courses. Community members may also volunteer for a 10+ week tutoring commitment.

How do I become a tutor?
Tutor Recruitment begins soon! We hire tutors at the beginning and end of each academic semester. Check our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/TAMIULiteracy) for our most recent announcements and for current Literacy Partnership tutor job opportunities.

Tutors must pass background checks to establish eligibility with either LISD or UISD. Since tutors work closely with students, they also must provide results of a recent TB test.

What will I do for 30 minutes with my student?
The 30-minute tutoring session goes by quickly. After training, you will know exactly the four steps to take with each student, yet there’s room within each step for you to customize your lesson to fit your student’s interests and needs. You'll always have just the right resources to meet your student’s needs, and you won't have to struggle to fill the time.

• Improve fluency with a fast-paced sight word activity and rereading of a book;
• Introduction and preview the day’s new book, at the just-right difficulty level;
• Engage your student in word work activities and writing;
• Return to the story to improve comprehension, by having the student re-tell what they read.

Do I have to be a future teacher to be a tutor?
Certainly not! Our tutors are on many different career paths. Whether or not you are preparing for a career in education, you will find that the experience enhances your skills as a professional.

You need only to be a strong English language role model and commit to training and supervision for at least one semester to be an effective tutor. The tutoring process is very straightforward, and we provide all the materials and resources you'll need.
