Small Group Instruction Videos
*Today’s Book Preview and Read (4:46)
By previewing the day’s new book, the teacher helps to activate prior knowledge and build vocabulary. As students move on to reading independently, the teacher has the opportunity to listen, support, and take notes on students’ reading progress. In this video, the coach works with a small group of students.
*Using the Whisper Phone (2:11)
When teachers first begin small group instruction, it is important to devote time to teaching students the procedures that will help make instruction run more smoothly. Students can use whisper phones to practice reading simultaneously. In this video, the coach provides the students with procedures on how to use the whisper phone.
*High Frequency Word Routine (5:28)
When teachers first begin small group instruction, it is important to devote time to teaching students the procedures that will help make instruction run more smoothly. The High Frequency Routine supports students in reading and spelling high frequency words. In this video, the coach incorporates the High Frequency Word Routine for the first time with this group of students.
*Writing Support: Stretchy Snake and Sound Boxes (3:10)
What can you do when students get stuck spelling a word? If the spelling of the word is phonetic, using “Stretchy Snake” with the support of sound boxes can help! Watch the coach provide support to a group of students during their writing opportunity.

In this video, learn important phrases to support phonemic awareness using sound boxes.
*Word Race (2:58) Activity Template
Word Race is a fun way to reinforce the reading of high frequency words.
*Sort It Out with Pictures: Digraphs /ch/ and /th/ (4:32)
Incorporating Sort It Out with picture cards not only builds phonemic awareness and phonics, but vocabulary as well. In this video, the coach works with a small group to sort out pictures beginning with the digraphs /ch/ and /th/. Listen carefully to how the students work on isolating the initial sounds while the coach provides support.
