The profession of pharmacy is enjoying a growing interest from prospective students across the country. The number of applications to PharmCAS colleges and schools increased approximately 10 percent over the previous year. In addition, applicants are applying to more programs, with an average of 4.8 applications per applicant last year. The rise in pharmacy applications is fueled by

• The growth in pharmacy career opportunities
• The transition to a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree curriculum for all new students
• The increased demand for pharmacists in all sectors of the profession
• The evolving role of pharmacists in providing direct patient-care
• The growing elderly population who typically have more complicated drug regimens
• The increase in the number and use of prescription and over-the-counter medications in health care

One of the best places for more information about the profession, career advice, and practice environments is the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, or the AACP.

Texas Pharmacy Schools Education Requirements:

• The University of Texas at Tyler Ben and Maytee Fisch College of Pharmacy

• University of North Texas Health Science Center System College of Pharmacy
• University of the Incarnate Word Feik School of Pharmacy

While each school can be different most Texas schools require the following tests be completed the year in advance. Most schools start accepting applications for the following year in May of the previous school year.

Recommended testing dates are July 20 & 27, September 14, 19, 21, 26, & 28. Note: select PharmCAS Code 104 to report PCAT scores directly to PharmCAS.

• TOEFL® or TSE®

Non-U.S. Citizen; Attended High School outside of the U.S.

Founded in 1900, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) is the national organization representing pharmaceutical education in the United States. The mission of the Association is to both represent and be an advocate for all segments of the academic community in the profession of pharmacy. That community comprises all colleges and schools with pharmacy degree programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, approximately 33,000 professional degree students, 2,600 students enrolled in graduate studies, and more than 3,200 full-time faculty. Three-fourths of the programs are publicly supported institutions while the rest are private. There is at least one accredited pharmacy college or school in every state but six (Hawaii, Alaska, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Delaware).

AACP member institutions award the doctor of pharmacy (PharmD.)—a four-academic year or three-calendar year professional degree program—following a minimum of two years of collegiate pre-professional study.
