Environmental Sustainability
TAMIU prides itself on its relationship with the community and shared landscape with wild fauna in its approach to environmental sustainability. The walkable campus is environmentally friendly with its use of greenspace, natural local vegetation, and more!
Many resources have been deployed to turn TAMIU from its traditional maroon to "Green" through use of the following:
- Improving the University’s irrigation system, saving millions of dollars over 20 years
- Updating plumbing fixtures to minimize water waste on campus
- Replacing outdated HVAC equipment with chilled water fan coil units, reducing possible points of failure, onsite noise generation, and reducing energy use
- Interior and exterior LED lighting upgrades
- Utility meter upgrades to monitor energy use on campus.
- Automatic light-control sensors
- Commingled recycling
- Energy-efficient appliances
- Electric utility vehicles
- Low-flow water fixtures and water bottle refilling stations
- Community garden
Earth Day
TAMIU celebrates this annual event demonstrating support for global environmental action, conservation, and protection of Earth's natural habitats. Various events throughout the day/week routinely occur focusing on elements of sustainability and responsible practices.
