The mission of University College is to empower students to become competent, resilient, and self-determined life-long learners. Utilizing collaborative academic and support programs, we aim to enhance the skills of every student through a personal empowerment path that fosters a learning community, critical thinking, and global citizenship. Students will be equipped with a growth mindset, a meaningful purpose, and a sense of belonging as they navigate through their education at TAMIU.
The First-Year Experience is a full-year curriculum for first-year students, or any student who needs to complete core curriculum requirements. Students enroll in UNIV 1201 in the fall and select a UNIV 1302 course in the spring. Our full-year program encourages students to connect with their peers, mentors, advisors, and professors and with other campus resources for support. Connecting with other cultures is also emphasized to help prepare them as global citizens. These courses also show students ways to develop the attributes of a growth mindset, such as seeking help, trying new strategies, and viewing failures as opportunities to learn from and grow. They aim to empower students by teaching them how to make informed decisions, take charge of their learning and, ultimately, advocate for others.

The Common Reading Program is a University-wide initiative aimed at engaging all members of the university and surrounding community in a common curricular experience. Dubbed “Reading the Globe", the program has enabled all First Year students to engage a selected internationally focused book through their University Seminar during the Fall semester. After application, competitive essay and interview, a group of students is selected for a study-travel opportunity related to the setting of the Common Read utilized.
