Wi-Fi Calling

WiFi calling is a carrier-provided feature that allows users to make and receive phone calls, text messages, and video calls over WiFi instead of a cellular network. You can call and text (SMS/MMS) as you do on the cellular network.

You need to make minor setting adjustments on your cellular phone to activate WiFi calling. Once enabled, cellular phones automatically use WiFi calling when needed.

To make calls over Wi-Fi, users can:

  1. Turn on Wi-Fi calling in their device's settings. (See carrier-specific instructions below)
  2. Connect to the University's Wi-Fi Network.
  3. The device will automatically switch to the strongest signal available.

Wi-Fi Calling and Emergency Services

During setup, you'll be prompted to include an address for 911 emergency call routing. The address for 911 emergency call routing helps first responders locate you at the address where you are most likely to use Wi-Fi calling. When you place a 911 call, it uses the cellular network when possible. If no cellular network is available, the address you provide during setup will be used. It is your responsibility to make sure you keep your Wi-Fi calling location up to date for 911 as you change locations. It will not automatically update.

Some things to keep in mind about Wi-Fi calling include:

  • Not all carriers support Wi-Fi calling
  • Additional charges may apply for making calls over Wi-Fi
  • To avoid accidental charges, users should ensure their device's status bar displays a Wi-Fi Calling icon before making calls or sending messages.
