WalletHub Names TAMIU 8th Among Texas’s Top Ten Universities
According to a new ranking by WalletHub, Laredo’s Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) is ranked 8th among Texas’s Top Ten Universities in its College & University Rankings 2025. Other than Texas A&M University, TAMIU was the only A&M System campus to crack the Top Ten.
TAMIU acting president Juan J. Castillo said the ranking for TAMIU takes on special significance for the regional university and the company it keeps.
“This ranking really gives TAMIU a chance to shine with distinction as more than half of the institutions listed are private and significantly more expensive,” Castillo noted,“TAMIU holds its own against our counterparts, once again affirming the University’s commitment to being accessible, affordable, and exceptional.”
To identify top-performing schools at the lowest possible costs to undergraduates, WalletHub compared more than 800 higher-education institutions in the U.S. across 30 key measures.
The resulting data was grouped into seven categories, including Student Selectivity, Cost and Financing, and Career Outcomes. Among metrics considered were student-faculty ratio, graduation rate, and post-attendance median salary, among others.
To better predict the challenge of future outcomes, WalletHub’s Best Colleges ranking also analyzes post-attendance metrics, for example, the student-loan default rate and the share of former students outearning high school graduates, to show the value of the education students can expect to receive after their undergraduate studies.
In general WalletHub observed universities rank higher than colleges.
“Universities tend to rank higher than colleges due to their inclusion of graduate-level programs, greater on-campus opportunities, and higher earnings for students post-graduation. In fact, the top 10 places for higher education in the U.S. are all universities. There are still tons of high-ranking colleges, though, which offer their own advantages like smaller class sizes, more personalized learning, and often safer campuses,” said Chip Lupo, WalletHub analyst, on the dedicated online ranking site.
WalletHub’s Top 10 colleges and universities in Texas are:
- No. 1 – Rice University
- No. 2 – The University of Texas at Austin
- No. 3 – Trinity University
- No. 4 – Texas A&M University-College Station
