Campus Improvements and Resource Additions Welcome TAMIU Students this Fall Semester
As students return to Texas A&M International University this Fall, they’ll find additional resources and campus improvements to greet them. Classes begin Monday, Aug. 26.
The changes range from new construction and expansions to dedicated computer labs and accessibility enhancements. Resource additions include remodeling of dining services, enhanced WiFi and dedicated streaming for on-campus residents, additional student parking, and new non-science research labs.
The most visible changes for students will be the $71.2 million construction of the Health Sciences Education and Research Centerr (HSERC) and expansion of the Western Hemispheric Trade Center (WHTC) now underway.
The three-story HSERC will be an interactive clinical building that promotes learning and research within the health sciences, one of TAMIU’s fastest-growing study areas. It will be a fitting home for two new programs funded in the 88th Legislative Session—Clinical Lab Sciences and the Doctor of Physical Therapy programs, both of which will have free tuition for the first year of the inaugural classes.
The two-story addition to the WHTC will include office and classroom space and instructional and research laboratory spaces to the west of the existing building. It will house business outreach programs, including the Center for the Study of Western Hemispheric Trade, the Texas Center for Economic Development, and the Small Business Development Center. Projected substantial completion for both projects is Spring 2026.
Renovations in Dr. Billy F. Cowart Hall will see a massive consolidation of computer labs on the second floor, conveniently centralizing building labs for students.
The Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library will see a move for its computer lab from the first to the second floor for better access, enhanced visibility and integration with research assistance and information desk service, which is also being relocated to the Library’s second floor. In addition, the Dr. Frances “Panchita” Gates Rhodes Children's and Young Adult Literature Collection is moving to the Library’s third floor.
In the Student Center, the existing Chick-Fil-A franchise site is being remodeled and will offer expanded menu items. New automatic sliding entry doors at the front and rear entrances of the Center will enhance building accessibility.
Anthony J. and Georgia A. Pellegrino Hall will see the addition of new social-science research lab additions to further empower faculty-student research collaborations.
On-campus residents will see enhanced WiFi in housing in addition to a new dedicated streaming service.
Dustdevil Athletics fans and Rec Center users will see new floor refinishing on basketball courts in both athletic areas.
The formerly reserved parking lot on the east side of the Killam Library will be opened to all with limited designated reserved parking.
Off-campus, the University is monitoring the ongoing construction of the US 69-Loop 20 Upgrade and meeting with TxDOT officials regularly to better anticipate, and plan changes as needed. This summer, the University piloted an altered work schedule to research alternatives that may be deployed as US 69 construction continues.

The first day of classes for the Fall 2024 semester is Monday, Aug. 26, 2024.
TAMIU summer hours through Aug. 9 are Monday - Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and from 8 a.m. – 12 noon on Fridays. Regular office hours resume Monday, Aug. 12.
