TAMIU Partners with Schneider Electric in Celebrating Earth Day, Monday, April 22
An Earth Day celebration is coming to Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) on Monday, April 22 from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. TAMIU and partner Schneider Electric have planned a fun day for students to celebrate the Earth through educational and engaging events.
TAMIU President Dr. Pablo Arenaz shared the importance of the Earth Day celebration at TAMIU.
“This year’s annual Earth Day celebration will feature events for students to participate in that highlight the importance of conserving our planet’s natural resources. As part of the Earth Day celebration, several hands-on activities have been organized for students so they can join in on the University’s “Maroon is the New Green” sustainability movement,” Dr. Arenaz said.
The lineup for TAMIU’s fun Earth Day celebration includes the following:
Event |
Activity Details |
Rhizome Art Installation |
Students will be able to view a creative rhizome art installation that is made from recycled materials in honor of Earth Day and can learn how everyday objects can be recycled into art! |
Green Pledges |
A fun interactive booth sharing out “green” tips will be set up; students will earn prizes and can also make a "green" pledge to show their support for our planet. |
Solar Smoothies |
Students can learn about solar power and resource stewardship while enjoying a tasty “solar” smoothie created from blenders powered by the sun. |
Sustainability is an important lesson for everyone, and for this Earth Day Celebration, TAMIU students will learn how they can also make a difference. Students are encouraged to tag their Earth Week observance on social media with #MaroonIsTheNewGreen throughout the week.
Arenaz noted that the University has worked with Schneider Electric in a partnership with important and tangible benefits.
“In 2017, TAMIU entered into a multi-phase partnership with Schneider Electric to leverage the University’s energy budget to fund much-needed energy and infrastructure upgrades designed to save money and improve the learning environment for its students.
“TAMIU’s 20-year project will reduce the University’s utility consumption by 33%. The campus will save 121.5 million kWh through various energy-efficient upgrades such as lighting fixtures and HVAC systems. The water conservation measures included will also help the campus save more than 24.8 million gallons of water annually,” he observed.
Notable improvements from this multi-phase project include:
- Expanding and commissioning existing electric and chilled water metering system
- Interior and Exterior LED lighting retrofits campus-wide
- Extending chilled water piping and chiller replacements
- Upgrading HVAC equipment at the Resident Learning Center
- Water conservation – upgrading irrigation controls
- Optimizing HVAC hoods in the kitchen and labs
- Onsite hypochlorite generation for the Residence Learning Center Pool and cleaning chemical generation
- Upgrading controls across campus
- Implementing a dynamic Conserve My Planet student engagement program.
TAMIU’s Earth Week 2024 is coordinated by the University’s Campus Safety and Planning Office, Environmental, Housing and Residence Life, Health and Safety Office, and the Office of the Vice President for Finance and Administration, in partnership with Schneider Electric.
