The Human Library Returns to TAMIU
For the second year in a row, The Human Library, an interactive event that focuses on holding personal conversations that challenge stigmas and stereotypes, returns to Texas A&M International University (TAMIU).
The one-of-a-kind experience is slated for Wednesday, March 29, from 3:30 – 6:30 p.m. in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library's Great Room. Admission is free of charge and open to all.
During the event, University and Laredo community members will serve as "Books" and share their life experiences and stories with attendees or "Readers." Visitors, or readers, will select a Human Book and engage in a timed, one-on-one conversation.
Founded in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2000, The Human Library is a not-for-profit learning platform that has spearheaded an international nonprofit operating on six continents and in 80+ countries.
Directed by The Human Library Organization (HLO), the effort aims to address people's prejudices by helping them talk to those they would not usually meet, using a library analogy that lends people instead of books -- and encourages all to 'unjudge someone.'
The event is led by Dr. Hayley Kazen, TAMIU University College's instructional associate professor, who encourages individuals to participate in this experience and to engage with individuals to challenge prejudices and stereotypes through dialogue.
"Learned prejudices and stereotypes lead many to unfairly judge a book by its cover. This opportunity serves as a valuable experience where we provide individuals with a space where we can safely question, answer, and defy stereotypes," said Dr. Kazen.
She continued, "Last year, we provided this dedicated space for thought and reflection. The University community well-received the event, which served as a welcome experience for Readers and Books alike. We hope to continue these meaningful conversations for years to come," Kazen explained.
