Service-Learning Summer Seminar 2020
The Service-Learning Summer Seminar 2020 is a 2-day development opportunity that will allow you to learn about SL pedagogy and help you develop your service-learning course. This seminar will be facilitated by Dr. Marcela Uribe and Ms. Leonela Preciado.
On average, 70% of faculty attending a Service-Learning Seminar implement a SL course the following semester. The seminar is scheduled for TBD. To learn more about the summer seminar, please contact Dr. Marcela Uribe at marcela.uribe@tamiu.edu.
Service-Learning Course Designation
The Service-Learning Center will work with the Registrar’s Office to formally designate a course service-learning (SL) on the University’s class schedule. The purpose of the label on the class schedule (SL) is for students to be aware the course will require a service-learning component.
Criteria
For a course to be formally designated as a service-learning course on the class schedule, it should meet the following criteria:
- Students engage in a minimum of 10 hours (direct or indirect contact) of planned service activities.
- The service experience is integrally related to the academic subject matter of the course.
- Coursework involves critical reflection on the relationship between academic course content and the service experience.
- Coursework involves critical reflection on the personal/professional and civic dimensions of the service experience.
For your course to show up on the Fall semester schedule for 2020, please submit your application by March 27, 2020. Link is right below.
Request a Service-Learning Course Designation
We would also invite you to schedule a meeting with the Service-Learning Center staff. A meeting is not mandatory, but we would welcome the opportunity to hear about your ideas in-depth and would be glad to discuss your questions and concerns.
For future semesters, please submit requests for fall courses by spring break and requests for spring courses by the fall midterm grades deadline. Once we have approved your request, we’ll work with your department to ensure that the SL label appears in the registration system and if appropriate, the course catalog.
Please visit our office to check out service-learning books for the development of your course.
