Bringing the University to You

“Bringing the University to You” is a four-part virtual speaker series sponsored by Humanities Texas and hosted by Texas A&M International University. Four virtual lectures and interactive speaker events will feature topics related to Borders.

On February 25^th, acclaimed Texas writer and president of the Texas Institute of Letters Sergio Troncoso will explore the topic of “Life as Crossing Borders,” and his experience telling the stories of Mexican-American communities. On March 11^th, in honor of Women’s History Month, acclaimed New England writer Suzanne Strempek Shea will speak about women’s writing, immigrants, community, and life experience in a talk entitled “Her Stories, Her Heritage: Suzanne Strempek Shea on Mining Her Life and Community for Fiction and Nonfiction.” On March 24^th, Dr. Scott Manning Stevens, director of Syracuse University’s Indigenous and Native American Studies program, will speak about “Native America and the Other Border.” The series will conclude on April 8^th with Texas and Southwest US Historian, Dr. Jerry Thompson, who will describe “Fifty Years on the Texas-Mexico Border” in terms of border history and his own experiences as a scholar chronicling its changing realities.

All four talks will take place in the evenings at 7 p.m. Central (8 p.m. Eastern) and are free and open to anyone who is interested in joining—just register for the event and you will receive all necessary information. Your questions are welcome and you will have the opportunity to interact with our speakers if time permits.
