This Weekend’s 49th Annual Border Olympics Cancelled by Weather Conditions

The 49th Annual Border Olympics scheduled for this weekend at the new City of Laredo Tennis Complex at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) has been cancelled due to frigid weather conditions forecast.
Roxanne Robledo of the Border Olympics Committee explained the decision to participating coaches by email.
“Following careful monitoring of the weather forecast, the Border Olympics Committee has made the difficult decision to cancel the tennis tournament scheduled for this weekend. The safety of our athletes is our priority, and the predicted weather conditions pose a significant risk,” Robledo said.
This would have been the second scheduled tournament at the new Tennis Complex. The United States Tennis Association (USTA) hosted its Rattlesnake Tournament Feb 7 – 9. The next scheduled tournament is the UTR (Universal Tennis Rating) Open Tournament, Saturday - Sunday, March 8 - 9.
A full schedule of Tournaments and Holidays impacting court reservations is available on the dedicated tamiu.edu/tennis website under the Tournaments/Holidays tab.
The long-cherished dream of tennis play on courts at TAMIU became a new reality January 30 with formal ribbon-cutting ceremonies for the 18-court facility.
The project grew from joint efforts by the City of Laredo Parks and Recreation Department, TAMIU Athletics Department, Laredo Tennis Association (LTA), and the United States Tennis Association (USTA).
The state-of-the-art facility features six National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) collegiate-level courts and 12 United States Tennis Association (USTA) recreational-level courts, constructed using post-tensioned concrete. It includes sports lighting, fencing, bleachers, and necessary equipment.
The courts meet the latest guidelines provided by the USTA and the collegiate-level courts adhere to all current NCAA, International Tennis Federation (ITF), and USTA rules. The recreational courts feature 36- and 60-foot blended line layouts, providing greater opportunities for all age groups.
The Tennis Complex includes multi-purpose areas, home/visitor locker rooms, concessions, a training room, and a second-story observation terrace and gathering space.
Tennis Complex at TAMIU director is Jaime Donjuan.
