TAMIU Signs MOU with St. Augustine High School
Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) and St. Augustine High School solidified their partnership to create a dual credit program through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at the St. Augustine Alumni Center.
The MOU paves the way to develop dual credit course opportunities enabling St. Augustine High School students to enroll in TAMIU college courses and earn simultaneous academic credit for college and high school courses.
In attendance at the MOU signing were Dr. Guadalupe Perez, superintendent of Catholic Schools, Diocese of Laredo; Dr. Olga Gentry, principal at St. Augustine High School; Rodrigo Romo, principal at St. Augustine Elementary and Middle School; Javier Peña, St. Augustine Catholic School Advisory Board president; Dr. Sarah de la Garza, director of College Readiness at St. Augustine High School, and Cynthia Sanchez, counselor at St. Augustine High School.
Representing TAMIU was Dr. Pablo Arenaz, University president; Dr. Claudia San Miguel, University provost and vice president for Academic Affairs; Rosanne Palacios, vice president for Institutional Advancement; Juan Gilberto García Jr., vice president of Enrollment Management; Scheiby González-Fisher, associate vice president of Enrollment Management; and staff members of the University's Office of Recruitment and School Relations.
Arenaz was quoted in the Laredo Morning Times, saying that students would take part in coursework from recognized and experienced faculty members.
“The professors who will teach these classes are scholars who publish papers in physics, biology and criminal justice, among others,” he said,“They are professors of national and international renown, and we are very excited to be here signing this agreement."
This opportunity creates optimized pathways that will help students gain college credits at no cost, explained García.
"We're committed to supporting our St. Augustine dual-credit program students and seeing them succeed. We encourage them to take advantage of these valuable opportunities in a University environment that encourages academic and personal excellence," said García.
Founded in 1927, St. Augustine High School is Laredo's only Catholic high school, serving grades 9 -12. St. Augustine High School is a bicultural, predominantly bilingual school community with a long-standing tradition of providing quality programming in academics and faith formation with 100% of its graduates applying to, being accepted, and attending college.
