TAMIU Students Win Top Awards at 28th Annual Western Hemispheric Trade Conference

Two Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) International Business Administration doctoral students and an undergraduate Business student won cash prizes for the Best Student Paper Award and Honorable Mentions at the 28th Annual Western Hemispheric Trade (WHT) Conference, hosted both virtually and in person recently by TAMIU's A. R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business.

The Best Student Paper Award went to Patrick Glavee, a doctoral student. He won a $400 prize for his paper titled, “Overlapping Institutional Ownership and Supplier Firm Risk-Taking Behavior.”

The first Honorable Mention Award went to Augustine Tarkom, a doctoral student. His paper is titled, “Economic Approval and Corporate Investment: The Invisible Hand?" He won a $100 cash award.

The second Honorable Mention Award for Best Paper by a TAMIU Undergraduate Student went to Diego Hernández. His paper is titled, “Factors Affecting Portfolio Investments.” He also won a cash award of $100.

The final Honorable Mention Award for Best Paper by Undergraduate Students went to a group from Universidad del Noreste (Tampico, Tamaulipas, México). Jesús Abraham García Yañez, Mauricio Alberto Rubio Aguilar, Camila Lineth García Flores, and Ramón Estuardo Hernández Cerda won a $100 cash award for their paper titled, “Development of a Web-Based Timetabling Software for a Mexican University.”

All winners also received free registration for the 2025 WHT Conference.

A total of 73 submissions were included in the Conference program in either abstract or paper form this year.

Attracting business leaders, experts, scholars, and students from throughout the Western Hemisphere to TAMIU, the WHT Conference presents forums for discussions on perspectives focusing on international business and economics each year. It is co-sponsored by the Center for the Study of Western Hemispheric Trade in partnership with Mexico's Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas (UAT) Facultad de Comercio, Administración y Ciencias Sociales.
