TAMIU Students Work with Community Partners in Service-Learning Projects, Win Recognition at Fall Expo
A total of 250 Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) students presented 70 service-learning projects they conducted with local non-profit and government organizations at the annual Service-Learning Expo Fall 2017 Tuesday, Nov. 14 at the Student Center Ballroom and Rotunda.
Service-learning is an educational experience in which students participate in a TAMIU credit-bearing course paired with an organized community service component. Key to service-learning are guided and structured reflections that support learning by enhancing course content comprehension, integrating academic and service concepts, and developing civic/social justice responsibility.
Students’ projects represented a total of 10 service-learning classes.
Project partners included the Cuéllar Learning Enrichment Center; Literacy Volunteers of Laredo; The Boys & Girls Clubs of Laredo; Don José Gallegos Elementary School; various neighborhoods such as El Cenizo, Pueblo Nuevo, Colonia Guadalupe, El Rincon del Diablo; HeadStart; North Star Sports; Russell Terrance Housing Developing Center; Book Warehouse; Farmer’s Market; Regent Care Center; PILLAR; Bethany House, and Voz de Niños.
Admission was free and open to the public.
Cihtlalli Pérez, outreach coordinator for TAMIU’s Service-Learning Center, said service-learning provides students with meaningful learning experiences.
“Service-learning provides students with meaningful service experiences that create connections with their course content, personal growth, and civic learning,” she said, “Through service-learning courses, students are able to apply what they learn in class to real-world settings which impacts their learning and helps them engage with current social issues in our community.”
