Music lovers should make plans to attend the annual Texas A&M International University Fall 2014 Band Extravaganza Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall.

Admission is free and open to the public. Doors open at 7 p.m.

“This is our annual Fall Concert for the Symphonic Band and Jazz Band and the concert will include both traditional band and jazz music,” explained Dr. James Moyer, assistant professor of music/director of bands.

The music program has increased over 18 percent in size compared to last year and the TAMIU Symphonic Band doubled in size since 2012.

The Symphonic and Jazz bands are open to any TAMIU student that plays a wind or percussion instrument. The ensembles are required for music majors and minors.

“The concert is a standard public presentation of our semester’s work and does count towards the students’ grade,” said Dr. Moyer.

High school juniors and seniors interested in music as major or minor at TAMIU are encouraged to attend.

Program highlights include “The Fairest of the Fair” by John Philip Sousa, “A Festive Overture” by Alfred Reed, “As if Morning Might Arrive” by Jack Stamp, and “George Washington Bridge” by William Schuman.

The Symphonic Band is under the direction of Moyer and the Jazz Band is under the direction of Jerry Quintero, visiting instructor of music/director of Jazz Band.
