New TAMIU Camps Help Prevent ‘Summer Slide’

An additional wave of summer camps is coming at Texas A&M International University, offering divers opportunities for youngsters to avoid the “summer slide.”

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Summer Learning say that summer camps provide fun activities in an educational environment, helping to prevent children’s’ minds from shutting down or regressing over the summer in a “summer slide.”

The “summer slide” is an actual clinical term used for students who quit learning in summer, often falling behind an average of 2.6 months in math skills and up to 2.5 months in reading skills.

Among TAMIU summer camp offerings are a children’s language program, middle and high school camps, math camps, a summer entrepreneurship camp, a science and an engineering enrichment camp, an Autism Spectrum summer camp, and a weight-loss camp, among others.

Camps with a recreational sports focus include a general sports summer camp and specific sports camps including volleyball.

A dedicated TAMIU website offering a comprehensive look at all TAMIU camps is located at tamiu.edu/camps. As camps have strictly limited enrollment, advance registration is advised. Online payment is possible.

For more information, visit the website, contact Kimberly Martin del Campo at the University’s coordinating Binational Center at 956.326.2765 or 956.326. 3067 or email kimberly.mc@tamiu.edu.

University office hours are Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. – noon.
