TAMIU Celebrates Latin American Studies Week April 13-17
Make plans to attend the events celebrating Latin American Studies Week at Texas A&M International University Monday, April 13 – Friday, April 17. All events are free and open to the public.
The events are sponsored by a Title V Grant from the U.S. Department of Education-International Studies and Foreign Language Program.
Monday, April 13, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m., Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall: “Writing with Light/Escritura con Luz” opening ceremony; photo/Spanish poetry writing collaboration between photography and Spanish students.
Monday, April 13, 4:30 – 6 p.m., Student Center (SC) 236: “The Bilingual Voice in the Workplace” with Dr. Patricia MacGregor-Mendoza, invited lecturer.
Tuesday, April 14, 3 – 4 p.m., SC 236: Short film screening—Adolfo R. Mora senior video project.
Tuesday, April 14, 4 p.m., SC 236: “Nueve Reinas” movie screening. In this film, two con artists try to swindle a stamp collector by selling him a sheet of counterfeit rare stamps—the nine queens.
Tuesday, April 14, 5:45 – 7 p.m., SC, second floor rotunda: Learn about Latin American countries while playing “Puzzle Bowl,” a trivia game based on Latin America.
Wednesday, April 15, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., SC, first floor rotunda: Enjoy salsa, merengue and bachata at this dance exhibition and workshop, “Afro-Latin Rhythms” with Joel Francisco.
Wednesday, April 15, 4 – 6 p.m., SC 236: “Language and Culture Clash in Forging the Social Identity of Latinos” with Dr. Luis Vega, invited lecturer.
Thursday, April 16, 6:30 p.m., SC 236: “City of God” movie screening. In this R-rated film, two boys growing up in a violent neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro take different paths: one becomes a photographer and the other becomes a drug dealer.
Friday, April 17, 5 – 9 p.m., Casa Ortiz Courtyard: “Music and Poetry Reading Under the Stars” will feature Spanish Club members on guitar and vocals as well as poetry readings.
