TAMIU Sets Combined Bands Concert April 30

Enjoy a concert at Texas A&M International University as not only one, but two amazing bands strike up in the first collaboration between the TAMIU Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the J.W. Nixon High School Honor Winds Wednesday, April 30 at 7 p.m. in the TAMIU Center for the Fine and Performing Arts (CFPA) Recital Hall.

This event is free and open to the public.

“In the first of what we hope to be many collaborations with area high school bands and TAMIU, the TAMIU Band Division proudly presents a combined concert with TAMIU and Nixon High School,” announced Dr. Michael Stone, assistant professor and director of bands at TAMIU.

The Nixon High School Symphonic Wind Ensemble is under the direction of Carlos Luna (’01, M.S. Ed.).

“TAMIU’s premiere band ensemble, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble kicks off the concert with John Adams’ ‘Lollapalooza,’ that features screaming brass and insane woodwind parts. Then the Nixon High School Honor Winds follow up with a march by John Philip Sousa, ‘Bullets and Bayonets,’ ‘The Engulfed Cathedral’ by Claude Debussy and ‘Aspen Jubilee’ by Ron Nelson,” added Dr. Stone.

Following that performance, the TAMIU Symphonic Band will perform “Festival Variations” by Claude T. Smith.

Then the two bands will combine to form one large group and perform “Carnival Overture” by Antonin Dvorak, directed by Luna. Stone will close the show by directing the combined band as they perform the fourth section from “Pines of Rome,” better known as “The Pines of Appian Way,” by Ottorino Respighi.
