TAMIU Graduates First MS in Nursing Class

Saturday’s Fall 2006 Commencement Exercises made history with the graduation of the first recipients of the Master of Science in Nursing, Family Nurse Practitioner from the Dr. F.M. Canseco School of Nursing.

The 14 MSN recipients are now eligible to sit for the national examination that confers certification to practice as a Family Nurse Practitioner.

A nurse practitioner is a registered nurse who has advanced education and clinical training in a healthcare specialty.  Nurse practitioners serve as primary heathcare providers for children and adults during health and illness.  Their goal is to help people of all ages stay as healthy as possible by teaching about and treating acute illnesses (such as infections) and chronic disease (such as diabetes).

The 2006 program graduates include Manuel Flores, Norma García, Graciela Gonzalez, Rita Haber, Marissa Jimenez, Julio Lujano, Alejandro Madrigal, Barbara Matelski, Claudio Ruiz, Griselda Salas, Sandra Santos, Martha Salinas, Yolanda Seibert and Alfredo Vela.

The University will close for the holidays at noon on Friday, Dec. 22.  Offices will reopen on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007.

Spring 2007 classes begin Tuesday, Jan. 16.

University office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
