The Texas A&M International University Women's Studies Minor Program will host a talk on "The Women's Peace Petition and the Women of Chiapas" on Monday, January 26 at 6 p.m. in Canseco Hall room 101.

The talk will be presented by Dr. Janet Gottschalk, Visiting Professor of Nursing at A&M International. Dr. Gottschalk is a human rights activist who has participated in conferences around the world, from Washington, D.C. to Beijing, China, in support of women's issues.

Her talk at A&M International will focus on the effects of low-intensity warfare on the women in the strife-torn Mexican state of Chiapas, and the Women's Peace Petition.

The Women's Peace Petition is a non-governmental initiative demanding that all governments of the world transfer a minimum of five percent of their military budgets over the next five years to health, education, and employment programs.

The petition also calls for the delegitimization of war as an acceptable form of social behavior. The petition will continue to circulate through the year 2000 as an expression of hope that the new millennium can usher in an era marked by the culture of peace.

For more information on the talk, please contact Dr. Jeraldine Kraver at 326-2630.

University office hours are 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday - Friday.
