Checking In
Now that you have arrived and are getting ready to begin your study abroad program, here are a couple of things you must keep in mind:
- Notify us of your arrival to your host institution and provide your contact information by completing the Foreign Contact Information form
- Check in with your host institution
- Check in monthly with us to let us know that you are fine
Maximizing Your Experience
You are on a life-changing journey. This can be a rewarding experience, if you make it one. Here are some tips on how to maximize your time abroad:
- Keep a journal. Documenting your experiences can ensure that you remember every moment
- Learn the language. This is a great opportunity for you to practice a foreign language
- Act like a local. You aren’t a tourist, take time to understand how your host country works
- Go beyond your comfort zone. Meet new people and explore the city you are living in
- Read what other study abroad students did to make the most of their experiences
In Case of an Emergency
Your safety and security is of upmost importance. Should you be faced with an emergency, below are some resources available to support you. Familiarize yourself with them prior to your arrival in your host country.
- Notify your host institution contact. Know how to reach your program director or coordinator
- Contact your insurance provider, Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI)
- Reach out to the Office of International Experiences. If after hours, follow this plan
- In the case of a serious emergency, contact the nearest U.S. Embassy
Reminders
Before you depart from your host institution and country be sure to complete the following:
- Save all your course syllabi and assignments.
- Submit your course syllabus via the Study Abroad & Exchange Program Course Information form.
- Register for your next semester once TAMIU opens registration
