Financial Requirements

SEVIS federal regulations 22 CFR 41.61(b)(1)(ii) and 9 FAM 402.5-5(G)(4) requires students to demonstrate proof of sufficient funds and a sponsor letter (if applicable) in order to qualify for an I-20 from Texas A&M International University.

A completed Financial Statement form must be submitted. This form requires official certification of sources of funds from the student. If sponsor(s) are unable to sign the financial statement form, a sponsor letter will be accepted.

Private Funds

Students may submit one of the following documents to demonstrate proof of funds:

Bank Statement

A bank statement must:

Be translated to English by an official notarized translation or have the Bank Affidavit form filled by your bank
Be official from a bank and clearly identify account holders name, type of account, bank name and branch
Contain specific amount of money available
Certify the sponsor to have at least the minimum amount stated on the Financial Statement Form (in U.S. currency) dated within six months of the first enrollment according to the following dates:
- Fall Semester: January 1st or later
- Spring Semester: May 1st or later
- Summer Session I: October 1st or later
- Summer Session II: November 1st or later

Note: Statements with non-liquid assets, property, credit card, bonds, stocks, CD’s, retirement accounts are not acceptable

Bank Affidavit Form

A bank affidavit form must be submitted in the event a bank statement is not able to be provided.

Bank Letter

A bank letter will be accepted only in the event a bank statement or bank affidavit cannot be provided. A bank affidavit is strongly preferred. The bank letter must meet the guidelines listed below:

Should be current
- Must show the ending balance
Must be official
- Must be on company letterhead/stationary
- Statement should clearly identify document source (monthly mailed statement, online statement, statement by request, etc.)
- Should include the account holder’s name, type of account, bank name, branch
Should be legible
Must contain specific amount of money available
- Must show liquid assets such as cash deposits, certificates of deposit, savings account, etc
- Statements regarding property, jewelry, cars, loans, and other non-liquid assets are NOT acceptable. Statements regarding investments such as stocks and bonds are also NOT acceptable
Should contain the specific denomination and currency of funds
- Funds in other currencies are acceptable
Additional information may be requested on a case by case basis

University Funds

The main types of university funds a student may receive are assistantships, fellowships, scholarships, or the Mexican Tuition Waiver. If you have been offered an award by TAMIU, then that funding will be used toward the funding requirement of your I-20. If your award does not meet the required amount, then you will be required to provide additional funding from another source.

Government Funds

An I-20 can only be issued until a financial guarantee with the student's name, university name, and academic major student is admitted has been provided.
