Beaumont Foundation
TAMIU Scholarship
Endowment Honors
Carlos and Judith
Zaffirini
The Beaumont Foundation of America has
established a TAMIU scholarship endowment
dedicated to providing scholarship assistance
to first-generation TAMIU students and honoring
Laredoans Carlos and Judith Zaffirini.
W. Frank Newton, president and chief executive
officer of the Beaumont Foundation of America,
spoke about the Scholarship Endowment.
“It is our privilege to present this Scholarship
Endowment honoring Carlos and Judith Zaffirini. It
is our hope that it will enrich and enhance the futures
of many Texas A&M International University students
who are the first in their family to secure their futures
through higher education,” Newton said.
TAMIU president Dr. Ray Keck said the generous
gift and the couple it honors has very special meaning
to the University.
“Judith Zaffirini and her husband Carlos have
been lifelong crusaders and champions of higher
education here and throughout our State. Their
personal narratives are buoyed by the transformative
power of higher education. The examples of their
lives have long inspired our students and, through
this remarkable endowed scholarship, will continue
you to do so for years to come,” Dr. Keck said.
The first TAMIU student to be assisted by the
Carlos and Judy Zaffirini Endowed Scholarship is
Rafael E. Contreras III.
Bringing their pride home:

to Texas A&M University.
The$75,000 giftwill providestudent scholarships
for those planning careers in STEM fields, explained
Candy Hein, TAMIU vice president for Institutional
Advancement.
“This Endowment is a remarkable, visionary gift
that’s expanded through a matching grant from the
U.S. Department of Education Title III STEM Grant,
to total $150,000,” Hein explained.
The family said their legacy has been achieved
through education and hard work and predicted this
will resonate with TAMIU students.
“Our success is the legacy of education, hard
work and putting in the time. We attach tremendous
importance and value to the education that Texas
A&M University has extended through multiple
generations of the Arguindegui family: Peter Jr. ’53
and Carlos ‘55, and on to Peter III ‘84, Maria Teresa
’85 and Maria Estela ’85,” said Alfonso Arguindegui,
Arguindegui Oil Company President.
