Dustdevils have
a Stellar Year
2012 was another electrifying year for Texas
A&M International University Dustdevil Athletics.
The men’s Basketball team got the year started
right, clinching their second consecutive Heartland
Conference title and earning the right to host the
2012 Heartland Conference Tournament.
The Dustdevils welcomed four visiting schools
to campus in TAMIU’s very first opportunity to host
a post-season tournament. Evan Matteson was
also named Heartland Conference Player of the
Year, the first TAMIU athlete to win the Award.
TheSoftball teamkept things going in theSpring,
finishing third in the Conference standings, earning
their fourth consecutive trip to the Conference
tournament in Austin.
After the summer came to a close, the Women’s
Soccer team kicked into gear and took the
Conference by storm. The 2012 team set school
records for wins in a single season, Conference
wins in a season, consecutive games won, as well
as team records for goals, assists, and points in a
single season.
The team also qualified for the Conference
tournament for the first time in program history,
falling to ninth-ranked Dallas Baptist University,
a team that went on to upset host St. Edward’s
and take the Conference title. Additionally four
players were selected to the All-Conference
team, an honor no TAMIU women’s player
had received prior to this season.
TAMIU Volleyball also wrapped up
another successful year, earning their
second consecutive trip to the Conference
tournament. The team had three players
selected to the All-Conference team,
including Conference Setter of the Year,
Daria Winckler.
